Gustavia likes Beckett

Samuel Beckett

Yesterday eve at the Southbank Centre, Mathilde Monnier and La Ribot performed Gustavia - and they made everyone crack up.

At the post show talk, Beckett was mentioned by someone in the audience, and Mathilde did reveal how he really is in everything she does, although, she didn't mean to reference him in this particular piece. But when she and La Ribot monotonously walked around the stage to the sound of the rain, each with a plank on their shoulder and with sudden changes of directions, or when Mathilde for a short moment appeared to be Death, they did evoke something Beckett-like but with quite a comical twist.

It's like Beckett the man has become Beckett the idea/emotion/philosophy and seized ownership of what people thought were their own thoughts or ideas. Ha!
