May 5th -9th: A trip to Europe

This week at Southbank Centre is going to be like a trip to mainland Europe. Because mainland Europe is where it all happens. At least performance-wise. This is why, I reckon, Nicky Molloy (Head of Dance and Performance at Southbank) has taken the initiative no one else has bothered (or dared) to take in a long while - with the mini festival 5 days in May different performance aesthetics and languages are introduced to us, as artists have been invited over from abroad (e.g. the wild women Mathilde Monnier and Maria Ribot). It's not that nothing happens here in the UK, but what is expression without impression? Vague, mediocre and stagnant...
Accompanying performances, workshops, post-show talks and debate, are a number of events which explore new formats of audience and artist engagement...
On Thursday 6 May A Meeting Place invites eight internationally established artists to respond creatively in a unique performance event to the following questions. What is most important in your dance practice right now? What do you see happening in the UK and on the international dance and performance scene at this time?
