At BELLYFLOP we believe that opinions = a-holes (you know, everybody has got one) and that means reviews are often just the unjust ramblings of some random reviewer.
Therefore, we will try, as much as possible, to get more than one perspective on each piece we review. To get the full flavour out of it. To give performers themselves a chance. To start the conversation.
Seke Chimutengwende has studied dance for 5 years, yet people always assume he is an actor. Well, speaking just comes naturally to him, thus we chatted with him over a cup of hot chocolate to hear the tricks of the trade. Seke talks of his time with DV8, acting, and why improv is offensive to some people. Read the interview here.
Yes, you have probably all seen this excellent moment in the American election campaign. Now the plot thickens.
Somehow, Ron Jeremy has managed to sneak into the background, eager to ask McCain a questions (possible a follow up: ‘Barack, he is an Eskimo. He’s not?’). Look in the audience, just to the right of McCain, at the man performing a dance he calls Eager Beaver Question Time.
Rumour says that artists have a tendency to use their right side of the brain more than the left. But is that not just a myth? Particularly in the actual process of making art.
Say for example, can you not make art using the left hemisphere more than the right just as much as the right hemisphere more than the left? Of course you can. Well, I am a ‘Right Brainer’ so I take the liberty to claim so, because I have my intuition (not facts) to rely on. Ha ha.
No, really. I have got many artist friends who seem to be much more logic, detail, facts, words and language, math and science, order/pattern perception, reality (etc.) -oriented. But they still make art, they are still artists. Personally, I think the idea of artists being ‘Right Brainers’ is a characterization – generalisation – that is just as much ‘promoting’ ’stereotypeism’ as all the other preconceived preferences and ideas out there.
But hey, I am just telling you what my guts tell me.
